Episode 20: Deep Space Nine's Not-So Finest Hour

Look, we love Deep Space Nine. A passionate, illegal-in-seven-countries kind of love. (Suck it, Canada! *flips off map, drops mic*) But not even our love is blind enough to ignore the "what were they thinking?" piece of meh that is Season 1's "Move Along Home."

For Transporter Room 3's twentieth (!) podcast, Scott and Phil go all third shap on this episode, which centers on Sisko and company's first encounter with a race from the Gamma Quadrant: the Wadi. Wearing what look like full-body astronaut food packaging and sporting forehead tattoos, the Wadi play a not-so-deadly game with our station's crew. They are so evil, they make Sisko falsetto his way through the sing-songy nightmare fuel that is "Allamaraine":

Allamaraine, count to four,
Allamaraine, then three more,
Allamaraine, if you can see,
Allamaraine, you'll come with me...

No, it doesn't summon Bloody Mary or Candyman, but after that tune Ceti-Eel's itself into your brain, you're going to wish it did.

So we talk a lot about that, and a little about: Spock sporting volcano-diving attire in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2, the latest kick-ass trailer for the new Trek videogame and some reader mailbag concerning the climatic space battle in "Yesterday's Enterprise." And no twentieth podcast would be complete without another Red Shirt of the Week. Who's our latest victim? Click on the podcast and find out!

  1. With the safeties off, even holographic bullets can kill. The borg had adapted and the phaser was useless.

  2. Ah, yes, we figured that out in a later 'cast. Thanks!

  3. I've been trying to watch ds9 on netflix, since its the only trek series ive never really seen, but I just cant get into it. I find episodes of voyager just easier and more fun to watch. I'm over half way into the first season of ds9 but I'm really not digging it, do you suggest that i maybe jump forward to a certain part? Should I just stick it out hoping it will get better? I'm a huge trek fan but I cant get into ds9 no matter how hard it try
(btw what do people think of voyager after all this time? I think in retrospect the show is just alot of fun to watch, maybe more show then any other trek series! I'm liking them alot more then I remembered)

  4. Season 1 isn't great and Season 2 is just O.K. mostly. Perhaps try skipping to the Season 2 finale and going from there. Let us know how it works out!

    1. My cousin (who with his father are the people who got me into trek) keeps saying how much hes digging ds9 on netflix right now. I'm going to give your advice on where to start a shot and let you know.
Personally I've found some real gems from voyager's run that I think deserve another look, if not a first look! (The last season voyager episode 'critical care" is something that is, politically, very timely right now, besides being one of my new favorites)

BTW I'd pay the netflix monthly streaming fee for the trek alone, what a cool thing it is.

  5. Let us know how DS9 works out for you -- and look for a Voyager podcast from us very soon!
