Episode 42: Is Star Trek Dead?

We have seen Star Trek Into Darkness. And we have wept.

Yes, J.J. Abrams' sequel to his 2009 reboot has finally arrived. But has it been worth the wait? Scott and Phil convene for a funereal episode of Transporter Room 3 as we discuss the many ways that Star Trek Into Darkness went wrong. And also what it does right -- but, frankly, there's not all that much of that.

We also feature a very special pair of Red Shirts this week who very well might signal the end of Star Trek as we know it.

  1. I'm sorry, but did you see the same film I did? I don't get it. Probably better then the last one.

  2. I agree. I liked it a lot more than the 2009. reboot. It went further with twisting the universe and yet it kept all the parts that made the original a classic. Something that is brilliant by itself.

  3. This is the first time you've ever found Kirk to be a an unlikeable asshole? Really??....'Star Trek The Motion Picture'. I rest my case. And as for violations worthy of getting your ass kicked out of Starfleet..Stealing the Enterprise & sabotaging the Exelsior in 'The Search for Spock'?...Not to mention the numerous fuck ups in the original series. '...Into Darkness' is better than at least 5 of the ST movies.

    That said...Love the show.

  4. I, unlike most people, liked The Motion Picture, for its subject matter. Sure there were many boring stretches where there was no action, but there was a story to be told within dialogue. I'm also a realist. You don't honestly think that they could make a Star Trek movie like that again do you? If you can't accept the new direction Star Trek movies are going, then you will never see one the way you want to again. As the borg say, resistance is futile, your culture will adapt to service us.

  5. I have to agree, this movie starts well and then goes down hill fast.

  6. I'm glad we can all agree to disagree. And in some cases, agree!

  7. That had to be one of the most half-assed "critiques" of a film I've ever heard. It might help if you paid more attention to the film you intended to critique. Instead, the telltale whining of an angry fanboy who can't accept anything new in his beloved franchise is laid bare before us, without any pretense of legitimate or thoughtful criticism.

  8. Wait a second, "Anonymous." Who sounds like the angry fanboy here -- us or you? Sorry our opinion about a movie bothers you so. You are of course free to move on and never visit this site -- or our podcast -- again.

  9. Just heard the review, and I found myself nodding through out the entire podcast, all 'cept for that comment about kirk being compared to a kid with a learning disability: you insult those kids because they try to do the right thing.

  10. Is ST dead? Yes.

Star Trek was ill before, now it's dead. And that's a damn shame!

  11. Well, we can only hope that it will yet rise again. Like Spock!

    1. Yes, there may still be hope, but I don't really believe it. At last not when they still use that stupid JJ Abrams universe.
