ReplyDeleteFirst off I'd like to thank you for everything you've done with the podcast, I know it's a labor of love and I appreciate it. It would be very sad if you decided to stop but I understand why if you do, I have a life too.
I do apologize, I'm using a burner account and name because my usual emails all have something that point back to me and with how crazy the internet is, I don't want any blow back for having a mild opinion about something.
I watched the last episode with friend about and we both have been less than happy with the show so far. Well he's downright pissed off, he follows one of those angry nerds on youtube... I do have to admit that the scene where Hugh meets Picard I felt the same as Picard when he said something like “It's so good to see a friendly face” really struck a note with me, because up until this point almost every person Picard encounters is royally pissed off at him and lets him know about it. We watched the episode together and he complained through the entire thing, I enjoyed it, we are no longer wandering aimlessly, the endgame is near. Afterwards we were talking about things and he had to use the bathroom. When he was gone my wife and I asked his girlfriend what she thought of the show, she's not a Trek fan. She said that she didn't really like it because it's so emotionally draining and kind of depressing.
I had not considered emotional drain. I spent the rest of the night ruminating about what she said and at one point when I couldn't sleep, I put on some TNG. I chose Tapestry because it came up at some point earlier. And man, at the end of the episode I was full of self confidence and hope and just plain felt good. But I went back to what she said, and the light bulb turned on. Most of tv for the last 10 or 15 years has been more gritty and realistic. Now back when I discovered shows like Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and Game Of Thrones it was a breath a fresh air. Shows just weren't that hard core much. But now, you can't buy a pack of smokes in town without running in to nine new gritty hardcore shows that are thinly veiled critiques on society today. And yes, I think I'm a little burned out.
Say what you will about the Roddenberry rule and Berman Trek, but it's, at least for me, now refreshing to watch a show that isn't beating you over the head with some political belief, or RIPPING SOMEONES EYEBALL OUT, or contrived melodrama on steroids. Sorry the eyeball thing really got me for some reason. I don't know why, I've seen my share of Saw movies. Another thought is that I'm watching a show to escape my shitty life, and a lot of shows are a little too realistic.
Finally I do agree with you on the Raffi drunk thing. But for, me I've had an alcoholic/substance abuser in my life, and I don't want to revisit that, it's a horrible thing to witness. But that's just me. The great thing is that the show is something different everyone. Maybe someone will watch the show and later on in life think again about turning to the bottle when they think of Raffi's tragic story.
By the way I fell asleep to Diners Drive Ins and Dives last night because I was craving more positivity and Guy Fieri has that in spades. Today I was thinking about how cool it would be to have him on a show as himself as a ships chef/counselor. I know that brings back flashbacks of Neelix for some, but I got really excited about that today.
It's the little things right?

Again, this is my experience and thoughts and you are under no obligation to agree. But please be kind, we need more of that in the world.
Oh one more thing, I'm sure you've talked about your sign off “well see you on grovetta island” but I don't know the backstory to that with you guys. For me, I always thought Picard said that and never knew it's actually Gravett Island and is completely fictional.
